Skin

As the name Iceland implies, the winters here can be very cold! Therefore, warm clothing such as shoes, caps and mittens played a vital part in the lives of the Icelandic people from the times of the earliest settlers. The skin was coloured using natural materials such as copper, clay and blueberry bush. This kind of shoes were worn extensively amongst ordinary Icelanders right up to the 20th century.

These comfortable caps, shoes and mittens are made of Icelandic sheepskin and you can buy them at the museum.
